Gliding over frozen rivers and lakes was once a popular winter pastime across northern Europe. A new wild skating tour of Sweden hopes to revive it, and revel in the sublime scenery, too.

Each winter, the Baltic Sea freezes – and the Swedes skate across it. Are they quite mad? We join a guided tour to find out. We had skated just over six miles when we reached the edge.

— Lizzie Enfield, The Sunday Times

I take my first steps out on to the frozen waters of the Baltic and my legs lock with fear. All that practice on the Christmas rink feels like a futile flirtation as my Swedish guide gently urges me to put my trust…

What is Nordic skating?

Nordic skating, also known as tour skating or long-distance skating is the Scandinavian tradition of skating across natural frozen surfaces: lakes, rivers, canals and open sea ice. Unlike rink skating, Nordic skating takes place entirely in the wild, covering distances of 25 to 75 kilometres per day on ice that forms naturally each winter.

Sweden is considered the world’s leading destination for Nordic skating, owing to its roughly 100,000 lakes, its extensive Baltic Sea archipelago, and a winter climate that reliably produces black ice, the smooth, transparent ice that skaters prize above all else. The season typically runs from January to March, when ice thickness reaches the minimum safe threshold of 5 to 6 centimetres required for guided tours.

How it works?

Tours run from January to March, departing from Stockholm Arlanda Airport. Your guide picks you up at Terminal 2 and handles all local transport throughout the tour. Temperatures range from 0°C to minus 15°C. All safety equipment is provided.

A little preparation goes a long way. The more comfortable you are on skates before you arrive, the more you’ll enjoy the experience once you’re out on the ice.
