Day 1I

Breakfast at the Hostel and then transfer from Östersund to Vålådalen (08.00 – 09.45).

The guide will meet you in Vålådalen; following introduction and preparations, clothes and other belongings not needed on the trip can be left here until you return. When everyone is ready we start our walk away from civilisation. After a couple of kilometres we make our first stop at the riverside, eat something and make necessary adjustments. After about 10 km we reach the tree line, the border between the forest and the mountains. Depending on the weather we stop for lunch in the forest or choose to get up a little higher into the open area. We continue on a small path on the side of the mountains towards the cabin. After some hours we get the first sight of it but still there is one hour walking before we get there.

Early evening we reach the cabin “Vålåstugorna” after 20 km walking, the host meets us outside the house and we get a bed to sleep in. Now it is time to relax and to take care of your feet while your guide prepares the dinner.

Before we head off for the Gåsen mountain lodge, we have a big breakfast. The stretch is sixteen kilometres, so we take it easy stopping every now and then for a snack, coffee or just enjoying the amazing views. Along the way we take a look around us to all sides observing the hardy and specific mountainous flora. Hopefully we see birds and animals that live only in these areas – if not they surely will have left tracks when they walked here before us. We reach Gåsen during the afternoon, in the evening we rest or decide to take a walk to the nearby summit. If you are doing the trip in June or July you can watch the extraordinary sunset from the summit just before midnight.

Day IV

Hiking to the mountain lodge of Helagsstugorna and as yesterday we enjoy the natural world along the way, taking it at the speed we find just right. The big mountain of Helags which you cannot miss, gives us orientation. It looks close but still there are several more hours to walk. Lunch break at one of all the small rivers we will pass. In the afternoon we reach Helags, a well equipped mountain station with 6 houses, a beautiful sauna and the big mountain just outside the windows. Those who have enough strength left might head for the summit after the dinner or decide to explore the nearby glacier. Maybe a nice sauna is a better alternative.

Dag V

The last stage down to Ljungdalen is thirteen kilometres – an easy stretch where long parts are downhill. The hiking starts right after breakfast and before lunch we reach Kesudalen, the café is open and a waffle with cream and cloudberry preserved together with coffee tastes wonderful. Still some 5 km walk before we reach Ljungdalen, partly we walk alongside Ljungan, one of Sweden’s bigger rivers. After lunch we reach Ljungdalen, a nice small village. Now it is time to get lunch at the restaurant and take a shower before we catch the bus at 15.15.

The bus will bring us over the highest road in Sweden, a popular tourist spot. Far in distance we can get a last glimpse of Helags, maybe the bus will have to stop to let some reindeer over the road. After one hour we reach Funäsdalen, a bigger village with some shops, here we have to wait one hour for the bus that will take us to Östersund.

At 20.20 you reach Östersund and the same accommodation you left a couple of days ago. If you like you can take the night train back towards Arlanda or Stockholm at 20.43.
